Becoming a Tutor

WRDS 4402 and ENGL 4400/5400

If you have any questions about tutoring or becoming a part of our center, please feel free to email us: wrcadmin@uncc.edu.

Interested in tutoring at the Writing Resources Center? We are currently recruiting for Fall 2023!

To apply for a seat in the (Fall 2023) course, please send a letter of interest and a writing sample to wrcadmin@uncc.edu. Seats are first-come, first-serve, and the date will continue to be extended until the class is full. We interview all interested students since you will be working with the UNC Charlotte community as part of the course (3 hours per week).

All tutors at the WRC—both novice and experienced—must complete a semester-long training course, WRDS 4402: Writing Partnerships: Texts, Contexts, and Collaboration and ENGL 4400/5400: Theory & Practice of Tutoring Writing (same course meeting). In this course, students will read and write about writing center scholarship, discuss tutoring practices, and conduct writing center research. Students will also tutor for three hours a week in the WRC during the length of this course. This course is offered in the Fall semester each year.

After successful completion of the course, and with the permission of the director, students can go on to become a paid tutor within the WRC. Continued employment in the WRC requires ongoing professional development via staff meetings. Experienced tutors may also apply for a small number of summer tutoring positions.
